Prior to the series' launch, Netflix did not predict "Squid Game" would become a worldwide TV blockbuster.

"Squid game" (Vietnamese title: Squid game) - Netflix's TV series is becoming a "global phenomenon" after its broadcast. The Korean survival title has become Netflix's #1 show in 90 countries, including the US.

"Squid game" mesmerized the audience with the story of 456 players who accepted to compete in a survival game to win the attractive prize of 45.6 billion won (39 million USD). All players face a life-changing opportunity, realizing that every game puts their lives in jeopardy. The highlight is that each game is familiar with Korean children's games such as green light, red light, dalgona candy splitting, tug of war, overpass, squid game,...

Released for 2 weeks, the "Squid game" fever has not shown any signs of cooling down. With the ending left open, fans want to know if the streaming giant will bring the series back for a second season. In an interview with Vulture, Netflix's head of global television, Bela Bajaria, expressed optimism about the potential of "Squid game" season 2. However, Netflix has not been able to make an official statement.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos says "Squid Game" is on track to become one of Netflix's biggest series ever. He said there's even a chance "Squid Game" overtakes "Bridgerton" to become the biggest TV launch event in the history of streaming platforms.

The success of "Squid game" surpassed Netflix's expectations, so the main question seems to lie with director Hwang Dong Hyuk. “He has a movie and other projects in the works. Therefore, Netflix is trying to find the right structure for Hwang Dong Hyuk," shared Bela Bajaria, which also means that season 2 may not come out anytime soon.

With the "right structure", she is referring to Dong Hyuk's arduous creative process. In a recent interview, the Korean director admitted that it took him six months to write the first two episodes of "Squid game", and that fatigue had exhausted him. So, going to season 2, Dong Hyuk wants to work with the writers and some directors for different episodes.

However, plans for season 2 are in the works at Netflix. From the unique plot to the outstanding visual style and talented cast, there are plenty of reasons to love Hwang Dong-hyuk's series. Of course, with the number of characters dying throughout the series, "Squid Game" season 2 will bring together a new cast of stars, which means more opportunities for new and exciting storylines.

This isn't the first time Netflix has expanded on a movie that has proven to be hugely successful internationally. The Spanish series "Money Heist" (La Casa de Papel) was originally broadcast on the Spanish network Antena 3, but it was later acquired and became a Netflix production. With global popularity, the series has continued to be produced with 5 seasons, the final episode will be released in December next year. So there's a global hit series like "Squid game" that will fill the void for "Money Heist" in 2022.
